CYRO ANNOUNCES DRUG CONTACT
COMPATIBILITY FOR ACRYLIC COMPOUNDS
Materials Ideal for Applications Requiring Gamma
Irradiation and Impact Strength

Rockaway, NJ – May 21, 2004 – CYRO
Industries has announced contact compatibility
for a range of pharmaceutical treatment drugs
and carriers for its advanced acrylic polymers
that are specified for medical device and drug
packaging applications. CYROLITE® and XT®
polymer acrylic-based multi-polymer compounds
and CYREX® acrylic-polycarbonate alloy compounds
have passed requirements of the United States
Pharmacopoeia (USP) 26, National Formulary 21,
2003 <661> “Physiochemical Tests – Plastics.”
Compatibility was tested for human insulin
solution, Taxol, Heparin, protein solution and
common drug treatment carrier solutions.
CYRO’s acrylic-based compounds are used for
medical applications such as IV adaptors and
filter housings, check valves, cassettes, blood
handing components, catheter accessories, and
rigid packaging trays. CYROLITE and XT polymer
compounds are both transparent and
impact-modified, ideally suited for applications
requiring gamma irradiation, exceptional impact
strength and low melt flow rates. CYREX alloys
are opaque and offer a high degree of structural
integrity, good heat resistance, chemical and
gamma resistance, and are ideal for both thin
and thick walled applications requiring
excellent toughness.
Manufacturers need to assess the potential of
leachables in device development and
manufacturing, and chemical compatibility is
critical when considering primary packaging
materials. USP establishes standards to ensure
the quality of medicines for human and
veterinary use, and it also develops
authoritative information about the appropriate
use of medicines, as well as standards for
strength, quality, purity, packaging, labeling
and storage for drugs and excipients.
The suitability of any CYRO compound in given
end-use environments is dependent upon various
conditions, including, without limitation:
chemical compatibility, temperature, part
design, sterilization method, residual stresses,
and external loads. It is the responsibility of
the Manufacturer to evaluate its final product
under actual end-use requirements and to
adequately advise and warn purchasers and users
thereof.
